About the FlowArts Network

Mission

Flowarts.net is a community resource portal intended to foster the development of the Flow Arts as a mode of creative expression and movement meditation and to spread their practice to a broader audience.  Towards that end, we promote the practice of various forms of object manipulation (including poi, staff, hoop and many others) as ways of connecting with Flow.  Additionally, we hope to foster a global culture and community of Flow practitioners and encourage the connections between them.  Because there exist many other discipline-specific online social spaces, the focus here is not on socializing for its own sake, but rather on highlighting opportunities for insight, inspiration, collaboration and connection across Flow Arts disciplines.

We hope that the tools provided here will encourage cross-pollination and push these art forms forward technically and artistically, and that offline collaborations can result.

This website is a project of Fund the Flow Arts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion, presentation and support of the Flow Arts and flowsters of all types.

What is Flow?

Flow is the state of optimal experience that occurs when your body, mind, and spirit are in dynamic balance. It's what's happening when the Now is so compelling that everything else fades away. Ego and fear dissolve in the perfect moment, time slows down, and whatever you’re doing becomes a meditation. Flow toes the fine line between controlling your actions and obeying your commands.  You know when you're in the flow, and flowing is half the battle. Where will and physics intersect, we hone our own flow.

What are the Flow Arts?

Flow Arts is a fast-growing fitness and meditation practice that blends play, exercise and dance into a fun and healthful activity that moves the body, stills the mind and uplifts the spirit. It's a physical workout that is also a brain booster, a relaxing way to chill out, and a compelling performance art.

The concept of Flow Arts is simple: learn to move in harmony with an inanimate object so that it becomes an animated extension of your body, then flow with it in ways that look and feel totally awesome. With enough practice, you can learn to flow with almost anything.  Staffs, hoops, batons and even spheres all make wonderful dance partners and teachers once you've grasped each tool's unique dynamics. The basic techniques are easy to pick up, but the adaptations are infinite, allowing for wide variation in personal style and expression.  In the rapidly growing global Flow Arts community there is still ample opportunity to make and share novel discoveries.
